MARCH 31ST  VARSITY CHAMPIONSHIP WIZARDS WIN 6-2

The two best teams in the Varsity division squared off in the championship game on Saturday March 31st

Joe Donohue gave his team a 1-0 lead six minutes into the first period.  Dom Castiglione tied the game one minute later with a blast from 30 feet out.   The story of the game was the superb play of Joe Donohue who came to this game to win in his last season in the DHAA St. Bernadette Soccer league.  Joe scored another goal for the Wizards 2 minutes later on a pass from his brother Raymond.  He again scored another goal 4 minutes later on a pass from Roberto Degregorio to make the score 3-1.  The Wizards scored one more time before the half when Roberto Degregorio scored on a blast right in front of the goal on a pass from Steve Fadel .    Joe Donohue had some defensive help from goaltender, Joseph Buttaro who made some nice saves the entire first period.  He also received some help from Joseph Barbati, Marco Campanella and Lauren Politano  who played unbelievable on defense.  The Rangers did not score but that was not due to lack of trying Dom Castiglione, Matthew Mangano and Sal Cardinale worked well together setting up shots but Joseph Buttaro came up big.  The Rangers goaltender, Daniel Taute did everything he could do to keep them in the game making some 15 saves in the first period.  Right at the start of the second period Joe Donohue made the score 5-1 when he blow a shot right by Daniel from center court.  The Rangers scored their second goal 10 minutes later when Dom Castiglione blasted a shot from the left side right by Joseph Buttaro.  The Wizards continued to play great defense and the Rangers could not get back into the game.   Joe Donohue scored the six and final goal of the game to give the Wizards a 6-2 win.

MARCH 31ST  JV TOURNAMENT WARRIORS DEFEAT THE JETS IN OVERTIME 4-3

The Warriors played the Jets to see who would wi the tournament.  The Warriors took a 2-0 lead with two goals by Nick Angilletta.  The Jets got on the board when Mario Pedernera scored on a shot in front of the net.  The Warroirs went up 3-1 on a goal by Nick Tarallo.  With 10 minutes to play in the game, Mario Pedernera scored two goals for the Jets to force an overtime.  In the first 3 minutes of the overtime, Nick Angilletta scored the winning goal for the Warriors.

MARCH 31ST  ROOKIE CHAMPIONSHIP WIZARDS WIN TWO YEARS IN A ROW    Wizards 8 Jaguars 3

This game started out as a nail biter.  The red hot Jaguars squared off against the first place undefeated Wizards for the Rookie Championship.  The Jaguars wasted no time scoring as Antonio Gentile landed a perfect pass on the foot of the Jaguars hot scorer, Joe Rowdis, who blew it by the Wizards goaltender for a 1-0 lead.  The Wizards counted with a goal when Chris Hutra received a pass from Tyler O’Leary that Chris shot shot scored the tying goal.  The Jaguars scored next on another blast from Joseph Rowdis from a setup play by Anthony D’Urso.  The Wizards responded when Chris Hutra scored with 6 minutes left in the period to tie the game at 2-2.  The Jaguars were playing superb defense with Gabriela Peralta and Sal Sorrentino having their normal fantastic games.  The Wizards received equally superb defense from Daniel Amato, Isabella Guariniello and Chad BouSaeed.

At the start of the second, the Jaguars scored first when a Joseph Fanelli pass found Joseph Rowdis who scored his third goal of the game.  That was all the scoring until 15:00 minutes were left in the game.  Chris Carbone was sensational in goal for the Jaguars coming up with some big stops during that 12 minute span.  Also Antonio Silva was superb in goal for the Wizards making a tremendous amount of saves.  At 15 minutes, the Wizards took control of the game.  Chris Hutra scored three unanswered goals for the Wizards in less than two minutes to make the score 5-3 and this kind of deflated the Jaguars sails.  The Jaguars tried to pump up their offense by putting up front their power shooters of Sal Sorrentino, Joseph Rowdis and Chris Carbone but the Wizards defense of Rosario Bentivedo, Isabella Guariniello and Daniel Amato were so strong and were able to stop them.  Sal Lagana scored the next two Wizards goals in less than 4 minutes to put the game away.  Chris Hutra scored the final goal for the Wizards giving them the win 8-3

MARCH 26TH JV 2012 CHAMPIONSHIP     STINGRAYS WIN 3-1

This was indeed the most exciting game of the season.  There were over 100 people in attendance to watch the 8:00 p.m. JV finale.  The first place Stars vs. the second place Stingrays.  Both teams came to play this game.  The game was a defensive battle by both teams for a good 12 minutes into the first period.  The Stars started Michael Barbati in goal and he was simply amazing with some nice saves early on.  Richard Fodera, John Pluchino, Lennon Tomaselli and Nikolas Angilletta played spectacular on defense for the Stars.  The Stingrays started goaltender, Anthony Scarpaci who probably played the game of his life in net tonight.  The Stingrays defense was led by Marisa Sparacio and Bobby Ioannou who seem to break up every scoring opportunity that the Stars created in their zone.    The Stars offensive line of John Castiglione, Richard Fodera and Nikolas Angilletta kept so much pressure on the Stingrays defense that they were able to score the first goal of the game when Nikolas Angilletta passed the ball to John Castiglione who fired a missile at the Stingray goal, the ball hit off the Stingray defender and went in the net for the first goal of the game.   Throughout the entire first half, the Stingrays tried every trick in the book to get their offense going but the Stars shut them down each and every time.  What shots the Stingrays did get on net, Michael Barbati ate them up.    The Stars second offensive line of John Pluchino, Julia Hajjar and Lennon Tomaselli also worked extremely well in the Stingray zone and getting several good scoring opportunities and making the Stingrays work extremely hard to clear the ball out of their zone .   At start of the second period, there was more of the same.  The Stingrays could not seem to penetrate that unbelievable Stars defense, the Stingrays kept trying but they were always locked up.  The Stingrays, Julia Maxwell, Jake Mangano, Nick Cona and Angel Velez continued to keep the pressure on and working hard in the corners to make something happen.  Finally with 14 minutes left in the game, the Stingrays caught a break, Jake Mangano drove from deep in the Stars corner and passed the defender and blasted a goal right to the left of the Stars goaltender.  Jake’s shot tied the game and at that point the Stars went back on the offensive attack.   The Stars took about 10 shots on net in the next two minutes but Scarpaci came up big time with some tremendous saves to keep the Stingrays up by one goal.    With 11 Minutes left in the game, Matthew McCarthy, Jake Mangano and Nicholas Cona drove down the middle and were able to get the ball to Nicholas Cona who was able to shoot it passed the Stars goaltender for the second goal of the game.  With the score 2-1, the Stingrays dropped their center, Matthew McCarthy back and tried to play three back on defense while the Stars attacked.  Again, Anthony Scarpaci came up with some big saves and some nice clears of the ball out of the Stingray’s zone.  John Castiglione, Richard Fodera and Nikolas Angilletta were relentless on offense but Matt McCarthy, Marisa Sparacio and Nicholas Cona played defense so well for the next 7 minutes they were able to neutralize the Stars attack and prevent any goals.   Then with 5 minutes left, Jake Mangano fired another shot from the left side of the Stars net to score the third goal of the game to give the Stingrays a 3-1 lead.  The Stars did not give up but they simply ran out of time.  The Stingrays won the JV Championship 3-1.

ROOKIE DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP

DHAA ROOKIE WIZARDS SHOW THEIR MAGIC IN 2011 SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP

After a long, tough and hard fought season, two giants came together to do battle for the title of the 2010-2011 Rookie Championship.  The Wizards and the Panthers played the final game of the season.   Michael Molica, who had an outstanding season for the Wizards, showed why he was a reason to be reckoned with. Molica scored the first 3-goals of the game for a hat trick, giving his team a 3-0 lead, with the first goal being scored within the first 30-seconds of the game. Teammate George Boutsikakis shot the ball in the net for a goal and a 4-0 lead. Molica would score one more goal, giving the Wizards a 5-0 lead at the end of the first half.   Wizard defenders Gianna Digregorio and Katie Castrianni played a spectacular first half, not allowing the Panthers offense an opportunity to score. Angelo Rodriguez was unbelievable in net for the wizards. Rodriguez made several outstanding saves as goalie, once even diving for the ball and barely deflecting the ball out of the net to deny a goal.   But the Panthers were not to denied, Angelo Fogliano scored a goal at the 4 ˝ minute mark of the second half, putting his team on the board 5-1. Chris Hutra responded for the Wizards with a goal on an assist from Boutsikakis bringing the score 6-1. Fogliano, came right back by blasting a shot into the corner of the net making the score 6-2. Wizard offensive man Sebastian Macoto deflected the ball into the net for a goal and a 7-2 lead. Once again Fogliano responded with a goal, giving him a hat trick and making the score 7-3. Mollica scored again to seal the victory with his final goal of the game, giving him self a total of 5-goals in the game and making the final score 8-3.   Strong play by Anthony Giannopoulos and Lennon Tomaselli of the Wizards would ensure no further goals by the Panthers, making the Wizards the 2010-2011 Rookie Champions.

 VARSITY DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP

DHAA RANGERS WIN VARSITY CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

The varsity indoor soccer championship game will be the last game ever played with the DHAA for the players graduating this year and moving on to high school. Some of these players have been playing since Kindergarten  and are playing the game at the highest level of play. In this game the Rangers and the Stingrays played for the varsity championship.  Anthony Mastrogiulio made an astounding 10 saves on some bullets by the Stingrays by Jesse Mangano, Stephanie Poulos and Center Michael McCarthy.  Antonio Barone added two nice shots as well.  Midway through the first half Michael Maher blasted a shot from midcourt to the corner of the net for a goal and 1-0 Ranger lead. That was all it took to seal a Ranger victory. The Ranger defense of Nicole Sparacio and Dana Scherer was spectacular, making it very hard for the Stingrays to get many scoring opportunities. A combination of offensive players, Matt Mangano, Olivia Hankish, Joseph Amato and Marco Campanella kept pounding the ball deep into the Stingrays half of the court, killing time on the clock. Goaltending for the Rangers by Anthony Mastrogiulio and Michael Maher was perfect allowing no goals to be scored in the game.  Stingrays goalie Kyle Adisano played a great game, making several spectacular saves in net and allowing only one goal to be scored. Abigail Fogliano, Frank Fogliano and Joseph Barbati played tough all game allowing very little scoring opportunities for the Rangers. Michael McCarthy, Jessie Mangano and Stephanie Poulos had over 20 shots on goal in the 2nd period but Michael Maher made some of the best saves of the season for the Rangers.

JUNIOR VARSITY DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP

DHAA STINGRAYS WIN JUNIOR VARSITY CHAMPIONSHIP

The Junior Varsity division is fast paced and well rounded, and the top two teams met to play and see who would be the champions of this division. The Stingrays and the Hornets battled it out in the championship game.   Nick Tarallo came ready to play and scored a goal in the first 30-seconds of the game, giving the Stingrays a 1-0 lead. Teammate Matt McCarthy found the corner of the net for a goal off an assist by Tarallo, making the score 2-0. With the clock winding down in the first half Tarallo had a short handed goal to make the score 3-0 at the end of the first half.   Outstanding defense by Marisa Sparacio and Bianca Cannata denied any chance of a Hornet goal in the first half.  The Hornets defense of John Castiglione and Richard Fodera played extremely well making sure that the Stingrays had few shots on goal.  Sal Fusco, Ryan O’Toole, Phil Alicandro and Michael Caso worked well together on offense for the Hornets.  Brandon Melio was superb in goal making many difficult saves. The Hornets center Ryan O’Toole put his team on the board in the second half, with a blast into the top of the net for a goal and a score of 3-1. Nick Cona responded for the Stingrays with a shot that found the corner of the net making the final score 4-1.  Nicholas Galbo and Nick Tarallo were spectacular in net, sharing the job of goalie by allowing only one goal to be scored and strong offensive play by teammates, John Paul Longardo, Nick Miller & Adam Giannopoulos kept the ball in the Hornets end of the field, denying the Hornets an opportunity to scored and ensures a Stingray championship.

JV AND VARSITY CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES

The JV division game was another superb game with the 1st place Jaguars going up against the 3rd place Stingrays.  The game was a defensive game but the Jaguars were able to find the net one more time - thanks to the great goals scored by of Peter Pisciotta and Gabriel DeOliveira.   The Stingrays goal was scored by Dom Castiglione.   The defense on both teams was the story of the game, Marisa Dicamillo and Joseph Barbati played a brick wall defense for the Jaguars and Bianca Cannata and Elizabeth Tesoriero for the Stingrays.     The Jaguars won the game 2-1.

ROOKIE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

In the Rookie Division - the 3rd place Stingrays squared off against the 6th place Jaguars.   For the first 40 minutes of play the score was 0-0.  Ambrogio Troia put the Jaguars on the board first with a corner shot that alluded the diving Matthew Maher.  The Jaguars looked like they locked this victory up until with 11 minutes on the clock - Sal Fusco blasted one in the top of the net to tie the score a 1-1.  There was great defensive play all game by Eric Psarreas, Michael Napolitano and Nicholas Galbo of the Jaguars and Bianca Cannata, Marisa Sparacio and Brianna Amato of the Stingrays.  The teams played back and forth with great saves made by Matthew Maher and Michael Napolitano until with 5 minutes left - John Castiglione shot one in off a faceoff that just passed a screened Michael Napolitano.  The Jaguars attack continued for the last 5 minutes but they just could not get the tying goal.  Stingrays won 2-1.

March 8th 2009

JV AND VARSITY CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES

The JV division game was another superb game with the 8th place Sharks going up against the 3rd place Jaguars.  The game was a defensive game but the Jaguars were able to find the net one more time - thanks to the great play of Jimmy Pisciotta, Peter Pisciotta and Anthony Marino.  The Sharks were led by the superb center Joe Donohue and Joseph Buttaro played a remarkable game in goal for the Sharks.  The Jaguars won 2-1

In the Varsity Division - The Rangers squared off against the Stars.  Ryan Safran (the sleeping giant) in the last few regular season games but in the playoffs - Ryan took his rightful place among the stars of DHAA Indoor soccer.  He stymied the Stars and the crowd by scoring 4 goals within the first 6 minute of the championship game.  These 4 goals were simply incredible as the Stars had one of the best goaltenders in the division all year long.  The Stars tried all game to battle back but it was hard to climb out of that early deficit.  Cody Mangano was on fire the whole entire game setting up the entire Stars offense.  Cody refused to go quietly and gave his team hope the entire game with his play.  The Rangers won the game  7-3
